The Byers family moved from West Michigan to start from scratch a “mother church” in Petoskey. Sent from their first church start-up, The Journey of Cedar Springs, Genesis Church was launched in 2005. Since leaving their comfort zone of West Michigan, both Brenda and Norm have developed a deep affinity for the people of this region. They both graduated from college with degrees in Communications and have served the Lord overseas, on college campuses and on staff in a local church setting. Norm has a Master of Divinity from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1999. They have three children: Jared, Jalynn and Janssen. Norm and Brenda enjoy taking walks together and they also enjoy family time skiing in the winter and camping in their pop-up camper in the summer.
Jamie and Kristie Woodall joined our team in January 2008. Some things the Woodalls really enjoy are family camping, David Crowder Band, U2, sports, Lord of the Rings, the Indianapolis Colts, and outdoor adventure. Jamie has his Master of Divinity from Bible Seminary in Clarks Summit, PA while Kristie has her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. They're now the point couple for the new start-up, Genesis Church Boyne City. Jamie and Kristie have four great kids.
Heather Van Haitsma
Heather is the Director of Connections at Genesis. She has been part of Genesis since she moved to the area a little over four years ago. Heather has a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College. She enjoys welcoming guests and helping them become fully engaged in the Genesis family. She also enjoys planning and hosting pretty much anything that gets people together, including monthly connectors and community outreach events. In addition to serving at Genesis, Heather works part-time at Great Lakes Oral Surgery and is a substitute caregiver for a wonderful Petoskey woman. Her favorite things are quality time with family and friends, making new friends, curling up with a good book, spending time exploring Northern Michigan and enjoying the outdoors — snowshoeing, hiking, kayaking, throwing a Frisbee etc., and road trips!
Dan Hasty has been with Genesis since its beginning here in Petoskey. Dan is married to a wonderful gal named Amy and they met while attending Genesis. Dan is currently the student director and is helping to mold and shape our children from nursery until they graduate high school. Dan and Amy love to spend time with the students one-on-one doing all sorts of outdoor activities. Amy is currently employed as an office administrator for Dr. Eugene Wang. We are a growing church, and more and more things are happening with the youth. We are looking forward to meeting your kids!
